3 Great Reasons For an Early Consultation

Prevent a Problem

If your child had an underlying orthodontic problem, you would want to know about it. Did you know that two-thirds of what goes on in your child’s mouth happens below the surface? Preventing problems is easier and less costly than correcting them later.

Treat at the right time

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7. This is typically when permanent teeth start to emerge and the jaws are actively developing—making it the ideal time to spot any potential issues early. Missing this window of opportunity could lead to more complex or invasive treatments down the road.

Get treated by an expert

As a parent, you want the best for your children, so it only makes sense to seek out an orthodontic expert. Dr. Allison Bergdoll and Dr. Warren Travis are leaders in the orthodontic field and will work with your dentist to deliver a superior result for your child.

CORRECT IT EARLY

At your initial consultation, Dr. Bergdoll and Dr. Travis will do a thorough examination of your child’s teeth and evaluate his or her jaw growth and dental eruption. There are certain orthodontic problems we look for at this age that, if not corrected early, will lead to bigger problems down the road. In these situations, we recommend early treatment before all the permanent teeth have erupted. However, most of the time, we plan to monitor development on a complimentary basis through our 7&Up Club and wait for ideal timing—which often corresponds to when all of the adult teeth are present.

Frequently Asked Questions

DENTAL

Will my child need braces, and if so, when?

Answer
Every child’s mouth develops uniquely. It is important to have your child evaluated early – as young as seven years old – so that our doctors can monitor their growth. Sometimes early intervention is necessary for healthy development. And on the other hand, children can often be treated with one round of orthodontic treatment when all of their permanent teeth have erupted. Making sure your child is under the observation of an orthodontist is key to understanding when it is the optimum time to begin treatment.

Will my child need an expander
or another appliance as a part
of their treatment?

Answer
A palatal expander is often recommended if your child has a constricted jaw or a crossbite — this means the upper teeth fit inside the lower teeth in the back of the mouth when they bite down. Signs of a narrow upper jaw may include crowded teeth, a shift of the jaw to one side, or difficulty with proper bite alignment. During your complimentary consultation, our doctors will be able to advise whether or not an expander will be a necessary part of their treatment.
